want a happy napster story? i'm so happy to write about this. for anyone into older bay area punk (ala samiam, j church and jawbreaker) you'll understand my delight. any napster supporters will, too. so i'm a huge collector geek for jawbreaker stuff. i know they've got several songs on various comps which i've collected over the years (mostly thanks to epicenter, somewhat thanks to ebay), some 7" singles and the albums. i thought my collection was short by one song and did a "jawbreaker" search on napster. the search brought up some songs off the jawbreaker teeny bop movie, jawbreaker songs i already have, and some other songs -new songs i downloaded. "split" and "into you like". "split" was AWESOME. i couldn't tell if it's old like "seafoam green" or new like "accident prone", but the collector geek in me went into overdrive. google searches, ubl searches couldn't turn up a discography with these songs! so i went direct and napster chatted with every napster host with "split" giving them my email, an explanation of my fanaticism, and my need to know where this song came from! one person responded. turns up we've both interviewed the lead singer, blake, and this guy, has over one hours worth of unreleased jawbreaker songs and singles!!! that he can burn for me. i'm waiting to find out what i need to do to receive the cd (give my address, pay money, or what) but yo, check this! did napster cut sales? well, the songs aren't even available ANYWAY! or for those rare singles? the record labels and band wouldn't even make money off of them anyway! thank god for napster for putting two fans in touch with eachother. amen. |
